🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: You can still steer but it will require significantly more force — especially at low speeds and while parking. Drive carefully to a repair shop. If the light comes on while driving at highway speed you can continue but be prepared for heavy steering when slowing down.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: At low speeds the steering wheel may be nearly impossible to turn. This is particularly dangerous when parking or making tight turns. The EPS motor may have failed or overheated.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Common on cars with electric power steering (most cars after 2012). May reset after restarting the car — if it doesn't the EPS motor or module needs replacement.
📚 Data Sources: Warning light information compiled from SAE J2402 dashboard symbol standards, NHTSA vehicle safety regulations, OEM owner's manuals, and ASE master technician field experience. Different vehicle makes may display slightly different symbols. Always consult your owner's manual for make-specific warnings.
