🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: Turn off all non-essential electrical loads (radio; air conditioning; heated seats; phone chargers). Drive directly to a repair shop or safe location. You typically have 15-45 minutes of driving before the battery dies completely.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: When the battery voltage drops below ~10.5V your engine will stall — potentially while driving at highway speed. Power steering and brake assist will be lost. The alternator may have failed or the serpentine belt may be broken.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: If the serpentine belt breaks you will also lose power steering immediately. If you see this light AND the temperature gauge rising pull over NOW — the water pump is on the same belt.
📚 Data Sources: Warning light information compiled from SAE J2402 dashboard symbol standards, NHTSA vehicle safety regulations, OEM owner's manuals, and ASE master technician field experience. Different vehicle makes may display slightly different symbols. Always consult your owner's manual for make-specific warnings.
