⛔
Stop Immediately
Engine coolant temperature has exceeded safe operating range. The engine is overheating.
📋 What This Light Means
| Light Color | Red |
| Symbol | Thermometer submerged in liquid (wavy lines) |
| Meaning | Engine coolant temperature has exceeded safe operating range. The engine is overheating. |
| Urgency | Stop Immediately |
🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: Pull over safely and shut off the engine immediately. Do NOT open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir while hot — pressurized steam can cause severe burns. Wait 20-30 minutes for the engine to cool. Check coolant level in the reservoir tank. Top up with coolant or water as a temporary measure to reach a repair shop.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: Driving an overheating engine for even 2-3 minutes can warp the cylinder head. This turns a $200 thermostat replacement into a $3000+ head gasket job. The temperature gauge should be between 1/3 and 1/2 on the gauge — if it reaches 3/4 pull over.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Most common causes: low coolant from a leak; stuck thermostat; failed water pump; blown head gasket; broken serpentine belt. If the heat stops working inside the car and the temperature gauge rises — you have lost coolant circulation.
