🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: The vehicle is still drivable on gasoline power alone — but fuel economy will drop significantly and acceleration will be reduced. Check the 12V auxiliary battery first — a weak 12V battery can trigger false IMA warnings on 2014-2020 Accord Hybrids. If the battery is good, have the IMA system scanned for hybrid-specific codes. Do not attempt to service the high-voltage system yourself — it carries 144V+ and requires certified hybrid technician service.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: Ignoring the IMA light can lead to complete hybrid battery failure, leaving the vehicle in a permanent gasoline-only mode with reduced power. Accord Hybrid IMA battery replacement costs $1,500-3,500 depending on whether you use a new Honda pack or a refurbished unit. In some cases, individual battery sticks can be replaced at lower cost. The IMA system also handles engine starting — a failing IMA system can cause starting issues.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Honda-specific: The 2014-2017 Accord Hybrid uses Honda's two-motor Sport Hybrid i-MMD system (different from earlier IMA). The 2014-2015 models are known for IMA battery degradation after 80,000-100,000 miles. Honda TSB 16-058 extended the hybrid battery warranty on certain 2014-2015 Accord Hybrids. If your IMA light is accompanied by a P0A7F code, the battery pack has deteriorated below the acceptable capacity threshold.
