🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: Normal braking is still functional but ABS is disabled. In an emergency stop the wheels may lock up causing loss of steering control. Drive with increased following distance and brake gently until repaired.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: Without ABS: in a panic stop on wet roads your wheels can lock and you will slide straight — unable to steer around obstacles. ABS pumps the brakes 15+ times per second so you CAN steer while braking. This is a critical safety system.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Common causes: failed wheel speed sensor; damaged ABS tone ring; low brake fluid; blown ABS fuse. The ABS module may also store a code separate from the engine OBD2 codes.
📚 Data Sources: Warning light information compiled from SAE J2402 dashboard symbol standards, NHTSA vehicle safety regulations, OEM owner's manuals, and ASE master technician field experience. Different vehicle makes may display slightly different symbols. Always consult your owner's manual for make-specific warnings.
