🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On
Step 1: Top up the AdBlue/DEF tank. Most vehicles have a countdown showing remaining starts after the warning appears — typically 500-1000 miles of range remaining. If you ignore it until zero the engine will not restart until DEF is refilled.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: Running out of AdBlue will strand you. The engine computer will prevent restart until DEF is refilled. This is federally mandated on all diesel vehicles with SCR systems (2010+).
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Diesel-specific. AdBlue is sold at auto parts stores gas stations and dealerships. Do NOT put diesel fuel in the AdBlue tank or AdBlue in the diesel tank — both mistakes cause thousands in damage.
📚 Data Sources: Warning light information compiled from SAE J2402 dashboard symbol standards, NHTSA vehicle safety regulations, OEM owner's manuals, and ASE master technician field experience. Different vehicle makes may display slightly different symbols. Always consult your owner's manual for make-specific warnings.
