🛑 What to Do When This Light Comes On

Step 1: If the light comes on while driving in snow or rain and goes off after: this is normal system intervention — no action needed. If the light stays on continuously: check for a steering wheel position sensor fault, wheel speed sensor damage, or a dead battery. Try turning the steering wheel fully left, then fully right, then centering it — this recalibrates the steering angle sensor. If the light persists, have the system scanned for ABS/StabiliTrak codes.
⚠️ What happens if you ignore this light: With StabiliTrak disabled, the Equinox loses its electronic stability control — meaning the vehicle will not automatically brake individual wheels to correct oversteer or understeer. This is particularly dangerous in wet or icy conditions. The 2010-2017 Equinox is known for StabiliTrak failures caused by the steering wheel position sensor or the electronic brake control module (EBCM), with repair costs ranging from $200-800.
🛠️ Technician's Notes: Chevrolet-specific: The StabiliTrak light often appears together with the traction control light and/or ABS light on the Equinox. If all three are on simultaneously, the issue is almost always a wheel speed sensor or the EBCM — not three separate problems. The 2.4L engine Equinox (2010-2017) has a known TSB for StabiliTrak issues related to the power steering module.
📚 Data Sources: Warning light information compiled from SAE J2402 dashboard symbol standards, NHTSA vehicle safety regulations, OEM owner's manuals, and ASE master technician field experience. Different vehicle makes may display slightly different symbols. Always consult your owner's manual for make-specific warnings.
